Governor Murphy Temporarily Pauses Indoor Dining

07.14.2020

In an effort to slow the spread of COVID-19, Governor Murphy has hit pause on allowing restaurants and bars to reopen for indoor dining as originally scheduled. The Governor sited research to show that virus cases are beginning to spike again, prompting more social distancing strategies and rules.

During his daily briefing, the Governor stated “We must hit pause on the resumption of indoor dining, which was to resume this Thursday. Given the current situation in numerous other states, we do not believe it is prudent at this time to push forward, in effect, with what is a sedentary indoor activity.”

The Governor originally signed an executive order putting in place a new rule for restaurants and bars who want to begin indoor dining. According to the order, establishments would have been able to reopen up two of their four walls to serve customers inside. The order describes that eateries with indoor seating with no roof, fixed roof, temporary cover with at least two open sides that let 50% of wall space are allowed to open.

“If you’ve got a restaurant that can open up two sides of your restaurant, you can have 50% of your wall space open,” the governor declared. “We’re gonna allow you to have that under that roof, which is another step hopefully to help out our restaurants.”

This order has now been paused until further notice.
