Big Changes in Indiana Notary Requirements

06.01.2020

Notaries in the state of Indiana are seeing significant changes to the processes of continuing their professional status. Beginning July 1st, all notaries must complete a continuing education course every two years during their eight-year commission. If a notary does not complete their education requirements by the specified deadline, their commission will be ceased.

“With the changes made over the past few months, we have taken huge steps to balance technological innovation with notarial integrity,” claimed Secretary of State Connie Lawson. “I am excited by the introduction of remote notarization in our state and want to extend a special thanks to the Business Services Division team for their hard work on this issue.”

Before this change, another rule was introduced on March 31st earlier this year, requiring remote notaries to carry out their duties through two-way audio/visual telecommunication. The exchange must be on a pre-approved platform and signatures must be electronically taken.
