San Antonio has grown by 8% in ten years. Estimates indicate a million more people will call the city home by 2040. Recognizing that airport expansion is critical to the regional boom, public leaders have approved a big build, including a third terminal, new gates, road realignment, and a ground transportation center—all for completion by 2028.
Completion of San Antonio’s ambitious airport plan is expected for 2028. According to Jesus Saenz, the City’s director of airports, this will be the airport of the future: “We are on track to give travelers everything they need — and then some. This is going to be the airport the entire San Antonio community will be proud of.” As Construction Dive reports:
Over the coming months, the city council will conduct pre-solicitation meetings and invite bids for contracts worth over $210 million, according to the San Antonio Report. Solicitations will include positions such as master architect, general engineering consultants, pavement management maintenance services and more.
The TDP is one component of the Strategic Development Program, which the San Antonio city council approved unanimously last November. Additionally, the airport system has begun the next phase of its airfield expansion, which will extend an existing runway up to a 10,000-foot runway once complete, according to the release.
Certain solicitations and bid opportunities are live on the San Antonio government’s website. One such bid for the airport includes reconstruction of Taxiway H, and more projects will follow as time goes on.

Speed and Action in San Antonio
San Antonio’s growth has shone the spotlight on the possibilities of modern, speedy transit options, including a high speed loop to connect San Antonio International Airport with the blooming downtown area. As The New York Times has reported, there are also several multiuse developments in the works, as well as a $450 million renovation of the historic Alamo Plaza, and the development of new parks and green space along the San Pedro Creek. The University of Texas is significantly expanding its downtown presence—and the campus is expected to serve 15,000 more students in the years ahead.
Texas builders are digging into plenty of other projects in the region too. Located between Austin and San Antonio, New Braunfels has become the third fastest-growing city—in the country. New homes are rising—and hundreds of millions have been allocated for infrastructure to keep up. Austin’s not done growing either—in fact, its airport is also looking at expanding and Tesla’s building a facility. Apple anticipates completion of its $1 billion Austin campus soon.
