Leadership at the U.S. Department of Transportation says it’s time to get the hard work of building moving again, and to that end, $3.2 billion is rolling out around the country in the form of federal grants. Building public works with speed and efficiency is the goal. Read on for details on some of the projects getting underway.
Bridges, Roads, Rails…
Outdated infrastructure remains badly in need of attention nationwide, and with plenty of dollars remaining from 2021’s bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), Washington’s leaders are eagerly getting the action moving, as Dan Zukowski reports from Construction Dive:
- The U.S. Department of Transportation awarded $3.2 billion in grants to fund 180 projects….
- Grants went to programs administered directly by the DOT as well as several operating administrations, with the Federal Highway Administration receiving over $1.4 billion, or about 44% of the total….
- The Federal Transit Administration will administer $497 million of the latest grants, most of which come under the Low or No Emission bus grant program.
- Among the grants were those to the Connecticut Department of Transportation, the Central Florida Regional Transportation Authority and King County Metro Transit in Washington state.
- Amtrak will receive $30 million for a bridge replacement program in Maryland on the Northeast Corridor. The Massachusetts Department of Transportation gets $3.6 million toward the Boston-Albany, New York, rail corridor, and the Illinois Department of Transportation will receive $500,000 for a program to extend rail service to the Quad Cities of Illinois and Iowa.
With the push to jumpstart critical public works, U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy announced, “America is building again … .At the Department of Transportation, that means getting back to basics: Building More, Building Efficiently, and Building Quickly.” Among the recently greenlit projects funded by the Department of Transportation are critical bridge builds, which include the largest single award: “$550 million for breaking ground on Alabama’s I-10 Mobile River bridge and Bayway multimodal project. This project will allow the state to implement desperately needed infrastructure upgrades by bypassing two aging tunnels and replacing the existing Bayway Bridges.”A full list of recently funded federal builds is here for contractors eager to follow the action.
